In 1963 my Grandfather was a young Mexican man working in the United Stated, turning dirt at a nursery in San Diego, CA when he got the draft call. His options: Go back to Mexico or join the Army. So he joined the Army . He was in the 65th Engineer Battalion in the 25th Division of the US Army. He was stationed in Hawaii. He still laughs about how his uniform had a pineapple on it! His battalion was responsible for building portable bridges for the rivers and building roads for the soldiers. When my mother spoke to her dad today I asked him to tell me one of my favorite stories he has often shared with me…the one about how one night while he slept in his bunker his drunk platoon sergeant came in an woke him up yelling that he better not have anything wrong with his locker or he was going to get his ass kicked for being a dirty Mexican. That’s when his friend who was a Native man got up out of his bed, grabbed the sergeant by the neck and said “you don’t mess with the Native Mexican!” After two years he was once again given the option to reenlist or go back to Mexico. My Grandmother also gave him two options: Reenlist and forget about her or come back to Mexico. Needless to say he went back to Mexico. Six months later he read that his friend that had saved him from being beat up that night in his bunker along with the rest of his battalion (who he had spent two years of his life with) were killed all at once in an attack in Vietnam. The following year his first child (my aunt) was born. On this day my Mom and the family remember my Grandfather’s brothers that lost their lives in the Vietnam war.
